Native Animals

Duck

Australia is a vast continent with habitat that includes rangelands, dry deserts, rainforests and mountains. We have an incredibly diverse native fauna including some of the world’s most spectacular and beautiful birds and unique animals like our kangaroos and our egg-laying mammals (monotremes), the platypus and echidna.

Immense changes have occurred since European settlement 200+ years ago. Land-clearing for agriculture, changes to burning regimes and the introduction of predators like the fox and feral cat, and competitors like the rabbit have led to the rapid extinction of many species. These pressures remain and are added to by climate change, resulting in more and more of our native animal species being threatened with extinction. In addition to conserving the environment we must take every opportunity to care for sick, injured, orphaned and displaced wildlife in an effort to help preserve our world for our children and generations that follow.
