Wildcare Helpline - Servicing the whole of Western Australia
(08) 9474 9055
The Wildcare Helpline operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week providing the community with access to an emergency number operated at all times by a wildlife rehabilitator. Wildcare Helpline is operated by the Department of Environment and Conservation and supported by Native Animal Rescue and other volunteer wildlife rehabilitators to provide a state wide service for the care of sick, injured and orphaned native animals. When you call this number, a volunteer will handle your enquiry and refer you to one of over 300 registered wildlife rehabilitators, who can assist you.
To assist rehabilitators in this task of managing native wildlife, the Department of Environment and Conservation provides a document titled “Minimum Standards for Wildlife Rehabilitation in Western Australia”
This document reflects many years of knowledge and experience from volunteer wildlife rehabilitators and veterinarians in the care and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wildlife. The Minimum standards are based on accepted veterinary practices, personal observations, common sense, good judgment and many thousands of hours of dedicated commitment. The minimum standards represent a new benchmark for wildlife rehabilitation in Western Australia. The Wildlife Rehabilitators Code of Ethics is included in this document as an integral part of these standards incorporating the principals of high standards of animal care, responsibility, integrity, compassion, safe working environments and professionalism.
Native Animal Rescue was a significant contributor to these documents through its involvement in the Wildlife Rehabilitation Consultancy Group. To download copies of this document click here.
